Sheridan Memorial Hospital Cancer Care Radiation OncologyOur knowledgeable staff will develop a specialized treatment plan specifically for you. With the use of sophisticated technology, our radiation oncology team will develop a plan of care that is tailored specifically to your diagnosis. Using Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), our patients will be treated on the Varian Linear Accelerator with a plan that is very precise and individualized for the person to achieve the best outcome.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

IMRT is advanced high-precision radiotherapy that uses computer-controlled devices. It alters the shape of the radiation beam in order to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor. It also allows higher radiation doses to be focused to regions within the tumor while minimizing the dose to surrounding critical structures such as blood vessels, nerves, organs, etc. Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) or 4-Dimensional Radiation Therapy uses the precision of IMRT, but also allows for further isolation of the tumor. The imaging is so precise that it accounts for movements of the body and organs, including the patient’s breathing.

Varian Linear Accelerator

The Linear Accelerator (Linac) is a machine that uses electricity to form a high-energy radiation beam delivered from many different angles, targeting each part of a cancer tumor and delivering a precise amount of prescribed radiation. Oncologists can pick the best individualized treatment option with exactly the right amount of desired dose output.
