Local volunteers Stella and Clarence Montano recently received AARP Wyoming’s highest volunteer honor — the Andrus Award.
“We are incredibly proud to congratulate Stella and Clarence, two of the most committed and generous community volunteers we know,” said Sheridan Memorial Hospital Chief Development Officer Cody Sinclair. “We greatly appreciate the time, energy and heart they give throughout the community and at SMH.”
Named for AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus, the award recognizes outstanding Wyoming volunteers age 50 and older for their exceptional commitment to serving others.
From delivering meals on Sundays and volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Association to serving on local boards, Stella and Clarence have dedicated decades to making a difference in Sheridan and communities across Wyoming.
Stella has served as AARP Wyoming volunteer state president and helped create Care for Caregivers, an informational series that provides resources and education for those caring for a loved one, neighbor or friend. She also serves as a Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce ambassador and is a member of the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Clarence leads the Sheridan Community Action Team, a group of Sheridan County residents who support local causes and connect with communities throughout the region through a variety of activities. The group’s efforts have included golf, baseball and hockey events, free movie nights and large food drives benefiting organizations throughout Sheridan County.
“Some of the most important work done to help our community thrive is shouldered by volunteers,” Sinclair said. “We’re so grateful to the Montanos and all of this year’s finalists, who help make Sheridan special.”
The Montanos were among several dedicated SMH volunteers recognized as finalists for this year’s Andrus Award. Fellow finalists included Richard Garber, who has served on the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation Board and currently serves on the hospital’s Board of Trustees, and Bliss Ragsdale, a longtime Hospice volunteer.
