Alice Shaw, FNP-BC, is an experienced family nurse practitioner now seeing patients at Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s SameDay Health & Imaging clinic. She returns to Sheridan after previously working in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as a travel nurse in 2013, 2014 and 2019.
Shaw’s inspiration to pursue a career in medicine began at a young age. Growing up in Portage, Michigan, she was surrounded by caregivers. Her mother worked as an emergency room nurse, and her father was a firefighter. Inspired by their example, she developed an early fascination with medicine and a strong desire to help others.
“I’ve always wanted to help people,” Shaw said. “And I’ve always thought the way the body works is fascinating.”
Shaw’s path into healthcare began at Southwestern Michigan College, where she quickly distinguished herself among classmates pursuing an associate degree in nursing. Selected as one of just 12 candidates from a pool of more than 300 applicants, she entered a competitive program that placed her directly in the ICU after graduation.
That experience helped shape the foundation of her career.
“The ICU was really my first love,” Shaw said.
After years at the bedside, Shaw decided to expand her scope of practice and return to school to become a nurse practitioner. Along the way, she gained experience in family medicine, endocrinology and internal medicine, building a well-rounded clinical background that now supports her role in urgent care.
While Shaw has worked across the country — including time in Michigan, Colorado and Arizona — Sheridan holds a special place in her heart.
She first came to the community as a travel nurse in 2013 and returned again in 2014 and 2019. From the moment she and her husband arrived, she was struck by the kindness of the people in Sheridan.
“Within the first couple hours of being in Sheridan, my husband and I were like, “Are we in ‘Body Snatchers’? Everyone here is almost too nice,” Shaw said with a laugh.
That first impression stayed with her and ultimately brought her back to the community. Shaw said her decision to return to Sheridan Memorial Hospital was shaped by experiences during her time as an ICU nurse — moments when providers listened, collaborated and trusted nurses’ clinical instincts to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.
“What really drew me to Sheridan Memorial Hospital is that the people here are honest, and they have integrity,” Shaw said. “I feel like this hospital truly puts the patient first.”
Now working as a family nurse practitioner, Shaw brings not only her clinical expertise, but also a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
She is known for taking the time to truly listen to her patients, involving them in decisions and creating a space where they feel comfortable and respected.
“I pride myself on making my patients feel like they’re not being judged and that they’re in a safe place,” she said.
Outside of the clinic, Shaw enjoys spending time with her husband and their two dogs, Neddy, an English bulldog, and Josey, a yellow lab.
An adventurous spirit at heart, Shaw describes herself as “one of those people who will try most things at least once.” Her hobbies include camping, hiking, jeeping, crafting T-shirt designs with her Cricut and soap making.
