Today the Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation and Hospital staff, along with members of The Link ~ Partners in Pink Committee met up with the Wyoming Community Foundation, Frackelton’s and Kim Love to receive the proceeds from Monday’s Dining for a Cause. The lunch and dinner event raised $12,886 for the project, and in addition, the Foundation also received $25,500 in matching community gifts for a total raised of $38,386.
“Dining for a Cause helped us focus on fundraising for new mammography equipment,” according to Ada Kirven, Director of Donor Relations at the hospital foundation. “This opportunity opened up doors for additional matching sponsors and we actually received $25,500 in matching gifts.” Kirven noted matching gifts were received from: Cloud Peak Energy Resources LLC, an anonymous Gift in Honor of The Welch Cancer Center, Edwin T. Meredith Foundation, Hammer Chevrolet, Herbert G. and Dorothy Zullig Foundation, Mr. William B Ebzery, First Interstate Bank – Sugarland, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph I. Goodwin, Drs. Gregg & Mary McAdoo, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Murphy, and. Dixie See.
Event Coordinator Meredith Sopko shared a bit about the October Breast Cancer Awareness project, “Over the last few months, our committee worked to raise awareness about the benefits of cancer screening and early cancer detection. Our fundraising goal this year is to raise $300,000 to replace digital mammography with 3D Tomosynthesis (TOMO) mammography equipment. Combining Dining for a Cause, The Link and sponsorships we have now reached the half-way mark, and appreciate everyone’s help over the last few months. We are also pretty proud to have had the largest turnout for lunch at Frackelton’s on a busy Halloween day!”
TOMO is a revolutionary 3D breast cancer detection technology system that takes 15 mini-pictures within 4 seconds. These pictures create a layer-by-layer look of the breast tissue, 1mm at a time. This removes the tissue overlap that may hide cancers or mistake dense tissue as tumors.
With this new type of imaging the radiologist can see breast tissue detail in a way that was never before possible. Data shows with 3D TOMO there is less need for recalls, fewer false-positives, less need for other invasive testing procedures and potentially earlier detection of possible breast cancers which can provide patients with more treatment options.
Upgrading this equipment and providing the newest technology right here in Sheridan fits with our hospital’s mission, to serve our community with excellent patient-centered care. Availability of this technology at Sheridan Memorial Hospital will keep patients at home for screening and follow-up care, lessening the burden on them and their families.
Hospital Foundation activities during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month included: The Link ~ Partner’s in Pink 8th Annual Breast Cancer Race with over 500 participants and 100 Volunteers; Welch Cancer Center Open House Tour and meet the staff; Sheridan College and Sheridan High School Volleyball Teams early detection education; Public Pulse; and Pint Night at the Blacktooth Brewery.
