Sheridan Memorial Hospital’s Education Department offers a variety of resources to the community, and include an assortment of topics, including American Heart Association (AHA) and Non-AHA courses. These offerings are an opportunity for the public to either obtain or retain required certifications. Classes are offered throughout the year by our team of enthusiastic, highly trained, certified educators.

American Heart Association (AHA) Courses


Basic Life Support (BLS) Renewal

In-person: 2-hour renewal in person class that reviews basic life support principles for adult, child, and infant CPR as well as interventions for choking. Bag-valve mask and AED use are also reviewed.

Non-Employees: Contact the education office to purchase a book prior to class. Cost for course plus book is $50.00.                                                                                                                                                                   
Heartcode BLS skills check out:  Skills check out portion of BLS after completing the online course. This option takes 1 hour.  
SMH Employees:  Contact education office to get access to “key” that will be placed in your netLearning dashboard. Cost is free.
Non-Employees: Go to www.elearning.heart.org to purchase and complete the online course (current cost is $28.50). Bring printed completion certificate to skills check-out. Contact education office to see available time slots for skills check out.  Cost for check-out is $20.00.                                                                                                                                           


Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

ACLS Provider Certification Course: This course is a 2-day class designed for health care professionals providing acute care to cardiac patients. Emphasis will be placed on pharmacological and electrical interventions utilized to stabilize the patient in the critical intervention period and immediately following.  Must have current BLS card and obtain a score of 70% on required on ACLS pre-test prior to attending class.

Non-Employees: Contact the education office to purchase book and check for roster availability. Cost is $50.00 for ACLS Provider Manual and $125.00 for course.

Pre-reading and preparation is highly recommended. Must have current BLS card and ACLS card cannot be expired. Learner must obtain a score of 70% on ACLS pre-test prior to attending class.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

PALS Certification Course: This is a 2-day course designed for health care professionals that focuses on the care of the acutely ill pediatric patient. Emphasis is placed on the recognition and treatment of respiratory distress and cardiopulmonary failure in children. Must have current BLS card and obtain a score of 70% on required on PALS pre-test prior to attending class.

Non-AHA Courses


Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program course conveys an evidence-based approach to care of the newborn at birth and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. NRP utilizes a blended learning approach, which includes online testing, online case-based simulations, and hands-on case-based simulation/debriefing that focus on critical leadership, communication, and team-work skills (www.aap.org).
This course is a blended learning course which requires Part 1 to be completed prior to an instructor led event (part 2), which is 3-4 hours of hands-on skills practice and simulation.
SMH Employees: Register for class in netLearning and notify education to get access and “key” for HealthStream (only system available to access NRP). Cost is free.
Non-Employees: Go to https://www.aap.org/en-us/continuing-medical-education/life-support/NRP/Pages/NRP.aspx to purchase the online course which is approximately $40.00 and the book which is around $75.00. Call the education department for availability for the instructor led event. Cost is $50.00.


S.T.A.B.L.E.

S.T.A.B.L.E. targets the post-resuscitation/pre-transport care of sick neonates and is a follow-up complementary program to NRP. 
SMH Employees: Register in netLearning. Cost is free.  
Non-Employees: Call education for available slots at 307-672-1021. Cost is $125.00 which includes cost of manual or $75.00 if they have their own STABLE manual. 


Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)

Non-violent Crisis Intervention is a course supported by the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI). This course provides information and equips the learner with the skills, confidence, and framework to safely manage and prevent difficult behavior. This training is effective for staff in the following ways:
  • Helps to boost staff confidence in knowing how to choose the least restrictive intervention
  • Helps comply with regulatory and accreditation guidelines
  • Creates a culture of safety with empathy, compassion, and respect
  • Enhances care and support for staff and patients
  • Helps to improve communication among staff by establishing a common language

Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

TNCC is a 2 day course designed to provide core level trauma knowledge and psychomotor skills associated with the delivery of professional nursing care to the trauma patient. Participants must pass written exam with 80% as well as three skills testing stations.

Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)

ENPC educates registered nurses caring for acutely ill and injured children. The course teaches participants to recognize the ill or injured child and identify significant, yet subtle changes, in the less acute child. This course teaches all aspects of pediatric emergency nursing, including, but not limited to pediatric trauma and resuscitation.
