When last we saw renowned classical singer Karen Clift, a cherished resident of Sheridan, and Wyoming native Spencer Bohren, who makes his home in New Orleans, they were walking a musical tightrope on the stage of Sheridan's WYO Theater in a concert to benefit the Hospital Foundation. Their surprising performance included everything from a fifteenth-century Italian duet to an Appalachian banjo song to the Beatles to Roy Orbison and on and on. The ease with which they shared their very different musical backgrounds invigorated every member of the audience, and the Foundation immediately invited them to return. For this year's concert, Spencer and Karen will continue their exploration of a wide spectrum of music, from classical to folk to blues, and even a bit of Rock ‘N' Roll. There's no other show quite like this one, and it promises to define the old adage, "expect the unexpected!"
Karen Clift's formal schooling took her on an exploration of music rooted in European classical forms of opera, chamber music, and recital pieces, Spencer Bohren's less formal study of music inspired his journey into American folk music and blues. As he has traveled throughout the US and Europe the last forty years, Spencer has gained international recognition for his songwriting, musical performance, and storytelling, as well as his dozen recordings. Meanwhile Karen has taken the stage from Carnegie Hall to equally important cities and venues around America to great acclaim, generating a recording legacy that includes two Grammy nominations.
According to Foundation Director Tom Ringley, "Funds raised at this Benefit will support Sheridan Memorial Hospital's Transitional Care Unit. The TCU is used to help patients transition back home after receiving acute care. The unit, located in the south wing of the Hospital, is being redesigned and updated to provide a more homelike environment for our patients."
